This year’s national focus of Reykjavik International Film Festival will be on Romania, with a special category of recent Romanian films presented within the RIFF 2011 screening programme, in partnership with Romanian Cultural Institute London.
Among the titles screened are The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu by Andrei Ujica, Outbound by Bogdan George Apetri, Loverboy by Catalin Mitulescu, Crulic by Anca Damian and Tuesday, After Christmas by Radu Muntean. Most of the films already got prizes or were selected in the official competition in Cannes, London, Locarno or New York.
Romanian filmmaker Adrian Sitaru will be present as “Emerging Master”. On this occasion, his latest film, Best Intentions, will be screened along with 2008’s Hooked. Furthermore, three of Sitaru’s award-winning shorts will be presented; The Cage (2010), Lord (2009) and Waves (2007). Earlier this month, Best Intentions took a pair of top prizes at the Locarno International Film Festival, the Silver Leopard for best director and best actor (Bogdan Dumitrache).
Taking a seat in this year’s jury for New Visions, RIFF’s competition category, is Tudor Giurgiu, president of the Transilvania International Film Festival, one of the best & oldest festival in Romania.
Finally, among the special off-venue events of this year’s edition of RIFF is the photo exhibition “Subjective Portraits” featuring work by celebrated photographer Alex Galmeanu. The subjects of the prints are well-known Romanian actors and filmmakers. Also, Romanian DJ Nico de Transilvania will be inducing movement of the guests’ feet at a special party within the off-venue program of this year’s festival.
