RIFF 2011 says “Thank you”!

The Eighth edition of the Reykjavik International Film Festival ended
October 2nd. While the organizers of festival hope that RIFF 2011 had
something for everyone we would like to thank you for attending the
festival in record numbers this year. The previous attendance record,
from 2010, was bettered by almost 2000 and the total for 2011 clocks in
at almost 27.000 guests.

RIFF 2011 presents: New Visions competition category

The 8th edition of Reykjavík International Film Festival opens in nine days! The program includes new works by filmmakers Aleksandr Sokurov, Wim Wenders, Giorgios Lanthimos, Michael Radford, James Marsh, Lynne Ramsay, Spike Jonze, Liz Garbus, Kevin Smith, Béla Tarr, Lone Scherfig and Andrea Arnold.

As always, however, the competition category is limited to new talent - filmmakers' first and second features admitted only.

Arabian Spring at RIFF

Last spring, a wave of rioting swept through many parts of the Arab world. People stood up against suppressive regimes and demanded a change. This section displays a fraction of filmmakers’ responses to the ongoing revolution. The films presented are Babylon, 18 Days and No More Fear.

Béla Tarr to receive Honorary Award for Lifetime Achievement

The RIFF 2011 “Honorary Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cinema” will be awarded to Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr. Three of his films will be screened at the festival, including his latest work The Turin Horse (2011). It can also be considered his last film as he recently announced his retirement from filmmaking.

Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig will receive the RIFF 2011 Honorary Award for Creatice Excellence. The award is given in the name of Vigdis Finnbogadottir, former president of Iceland, and will be awarded every year from now on.

RIFF APPOINTS GIORGIO GOSETTI AS DIRECTOR OF MAIN SECTION

RIFF announces the appointment of Giorgio Gosetti as the Director of the main section and General programme advisor of the Reykjavik International Film Festival, which takes place September 22 – October 2. Gosetti replaces Founding Artistic Director Dimitri Eipides who has taken on the directorship of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and the Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival as well as his programming duties in Toronto and Montreal.

After some very nice years at Frikirkjuvegur 1 in downtown Reykjavik, RIFF has relocated to a new building at Tjarnargata 12. It's a new home, but in truth we moved out of a building that used to be an old school to another that used to be an old fire station.

A Final Farewell

News of the passing of novelist Thor Vilhjálmsson, one of Iceland's most revered and respected authors, have left the organizers of Reykjavík International Film Festival struck with grief. We have truly lost one of our dearest friends and benefactors.

Judith Ehrlich, guest at RIFF 2010, returns to Iceland

Among the most popular and widely discussed films at RIFF 2010 was Judith Ehrlich's documentary The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers, which was nominated as Best Documentary at last year's Academy Awards. Ehrlich came to Iceland as a guest of the film festival to present her film.

Also present for the masterclass is critic Harlan Jacobsson. The talks begin at 15:00.

Fresh French animated Shorts at RIFF - not to be missed!

"Les Petites Formes" is a program of short animated movies from all over the world screened each December in Marseille (France) during Laterna Magica, a festival organized by Fotokino. This year RIFF will celebrate Les Petites Formes by screening a selection of the best movies programmed since 2006. The magic of Les Petites Formes is not to be missed! Noam Chomsky and the Media: screening and Q&A with the director.

Noam Chomsky's live video conference at RIFF was a resounding success, with a queue going around the block before the session began. This evening, RIFF screens the famous "Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media" (1992). Director Peter Wintonick will be present and participates in a Q&A afterwards. The screening starts at 20:00 and takes place in Hafnarhusid museum at Tryggvagata.

This year's guest of honor at RIFF is Jim Jarmusch and this evening the Festival proudly presents two of his films in a double-feature: the legendary Down By Law (1986) and his latest feature, The Limits of Control (2009). Mr Jarmusch will be present for the screening and will participate in a Q&A afterwards. The double-feature will be screened at Háskólabíó theater and starts at 18:00.

Kría Brekkan - the alter ego of Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir, who as a musician has collaborated or been a part of bands such as múm, Stórsveit Nix Noltes, Slowblow, Mice Parade and Animal Collective - will perform to Jean Epstein’s version of The Fall of The House of Usher, made in 1928, inspired by a story by Edgar Allan Poe.

The ticket sale for this year's festival has started! A full festival pass that grants access to all films costs 9.000 ISK, an eight ticket coupon card costs 7.000 ISK and can be used by more than one person and a single ticket costs 1.000 ISK.

Fifteen great films fill the Open Seas category at this year's RIFF. Open Seas presents acclaimed films from many of the most talented and respected filmmakers in the world. These include films which have been successful at festivals around the world in the last few months. Among films in the category this year is a film about a transsexual, a weird Finnish family and the life in a Danish prison.

New Visions for everyone

The New Vision category, RIFF's competition category, is now ready. Twelve great films from all around the world will compete for RIFF's main prize, the Golden Puffin, which was designed by Stefán Pétur Sólveigarson. The category is limited to the first or second film of up-and-coming directors. This year, the twelve directors come from eleven different countries.

The Reykjavik International Film Festival is on it‘s way – bigger and better than ever. 44 films have now been confirmed on the festival‘s program which starts on September 23.

Jim Jarmusch at RIFF 2010!

RIFF is proud to announce that Jim Jarmusch will be a guest of honor at the seventh edition of the festival, which takes place from September 23 to October 3 this fall. Jarmusch will receive RIFF’s honorary award for his lifetime achievement, which will be presented by the president of Iceland, Mr. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson.

First films confirmed

Reykjavik International Film Festival is drawing closer and some 20 films have already been confirmed for RIFF 2010. About one hundred films will be screened starting the 23th of September and among them are some very interesting Danish ones....

A bigshot at RIFF

The Reykjavik International Film Festival is proud to announce that Cameron Bailey, director of the Toronto International Film Festival, will take place in RIFF’s festival jury for 2010. The jury is responsible for deciding which film receives the Golden puffin, RIFF’s main award.
